"I scream. You scream. ...
(I'm feeling nostalgic)

We all scream for Ice Cream!"  I don't think I've ever heard that song, but I've known that line for years and years!

The weather is finally warming up enough to turn my thoughts to just that -- ice cream.  Ice cream on a hot summer's day will immediately transport you back in time to your childhood.  Whether it's your favorite flavor, favorite ice cream shop, or family outing, it will take you there.

When I was a child, the one sure-fire way to make my sisters and I behave was the promise of a trip to the Stoney Creek Dairy.  It was usually a Sunday-after-dinner trip that took us on a ride of about 40 minutes through the country side.  The whole trip was occupied with what we were going to have when we got there.  This little dairy made all their ice cream on the premises. You could smell the sweet, creamy goodness as soon as you got out of the car.  There was always a line-up, but for the three of us, it didn't matter.  We entertained ourselves by watching the variety of goldfish in a large aquarium at one end of the shop.  Bird cages of budgies and canaries hung above it.  Of course, that wouldn't be allowed now, but I don't think we suffered any from the presence of either of them.  They were part of the experience, and something we looked forward to almost as much as the ice cream.

Soon it was our turn.  We'd watch closely, chins resting on the counter, as our favorites were hand scooped into tapered cones until the cone was dwarfed by the ice cream.  Burgundy Cherry was my Dad's favorite and always full of sweet, dark cherries; for my Mother -- chocolate. For the three of us, there was only one choice -- Chocolate Mint.  This was no ordinary chocolate mint!  It wasn't the wimpy pale green with miniature chocolate chips that you can buy from the grocery store.  This Chocolate Mint was premium -- bright green sweet minty ice cream with thick rivers of chocolate fudge swirled through it...  The challenge was always to be able to finish it before the end of the cone became really soggy and started to leak bright green on everything!

Over the years, I've tested other flavors; other dairies.  I admit that I do have a soft spot for a good ol' vanilla soft-serve cone from the Dairy Queen -- sometimes dipped in chocolate or butterscotch.  But it will always make me crave Stoney Creek Dairy's Chocolate Mint, scooped larger than the eyes of three young girls peeking over the counter....

If you get to Stoney Creek, Ontario, the dairy isn't hard to find.  You won't be disappointed.  :)  They probably have your favorite flavor too!

My old favorite was lemon custard ice cream, and I can't find it any more, been about 20 years since I've had it.
