80-Year-Old Man Arrested
(I'm feeling
angry
)
I’m not sure if this story is true or not. After all, not only have I not seen it in the mainstream media, but this story is just too outrageous to be true, right? But let’s assume that it is for the lulz. What I’m going to do for this blog entry is copy and paste and online article and I’m going to give my comments on it.
80 Year Old Man Arrested For Wearing Anti-war T-shirt In Mall SOPHIA CHANG Newsday Tuesday, April 1, 2008
On Saturday, Zirkel, 80, was at an anti-war rally outside the mall in Lake Grove, wearing a white T-shirt splotched with red and emblazoned with a simple message about the fatalities of the Iraq war: “4,000 troops, 1 million Iraqis dead. Enough.”
During the rally, Zirkel and his wife went into the mall’s food court for coffee and French fries. After he declined mall security’s request to either turn the T-shirt inside out or leave, he said police put him in a wheelchair and escorted him from the mall. Suffolk police charged him with criminal trespassing and resisting arrest.
First off, how the hell was this man arrested for criminal trespassing? He walked into a mall DURING mall hours exercising his right to free speech in a peaceful manner! Secondly, to confine an able-bodied person to a wheelchair to escort them out of a public place is a great insult to those who need wheelchairs to get around. Nice going idiots.
Police also said Zirkel was passing out leaflets at the mall, a charge he disputes. Mall officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.
“I’m being punished for six words that spoke the truth. That’s insanity. War is insanity,” said Zirkel, who said his nephew recently returned from active duty in Iraq.
“I’m wearing the T-shirt again,” he added.
If I was that old man, not only would I wear the exact same t-shirt in the same mall where I was arrested, but I would also bring a copy the U.S Constitution with me just in case. But hey, maybe that won’t do any good. After all, the constitution is just a goddamn piece of paper. This isn’t the only case where a person was arrested for exercising their right to free speech in a mall.
Police arrested Stephen Downs, 61, on March 3, 2003, after he wore a shirt that read “Give Peace a Chance” to the Crossgates Mall in Albany. Downs refused to remove the shirt or leave the mall and was charged with trespassing. Charges were later dropped. The New York Civil Liberties Union used Downs’ arrest as a launching point for a campaign against the alleged lack of free speech in malls.
