A Suicide Every 47 Minutes in Germany
(I'm feeling worried)
Every 47 minutes a human dies in Germany by killing himself. The number of suicide deaths in Germany was last year 9,402. More people died from suicide than from the consequences of traffic accidents, drug abuse, murder, homicide and AIDS combined! The number of the attempted suicides is estimated to be more than 100,000 per year. Over 600,000 people in Germany suffer indirectly from the consequences of a committed or attempted self killing. Over four million people in Germany are suffering from severe depression. That's about 5 per cent of the inhabitants of the country.
Now, with those figures in mind – would you say, our modern society is a success? Double as many self killings than road deaths and NOBODY talks about it? Now how double standard is that? We have serious mental problems in our capitalistic system, driven by egoism and materialism. In making society freer we have made it more anonymous, in making it more productive we made it less human – we have at many points forgotten WHAT we are: Beings of body, mind and soul. The latter two are so underdeveloped nowadays.
My future dream would be a society where the production of goods is taken care of machines – owned and directed by an anonymous capital system. No more hedge funds, no more lonestars. No more majority ownership in big companies – we need broad shareholder masses. WE ARE THE CAPITAL. WE ARE THE MARKETS! Not some analyst on CNBC. Then, in my future dream we could spend much more time TAKING CARE of each other. In some countries (Switzerland, Sweden) this society model with part time jobs combined with social benefits is already working. Unfortunately the “big” players like the US or Germany haven't realized the begin of the post-production era yet.
We have spent so much time getting rich that we have gotten sick. And not only on an individual basis – no, the scale of the mind grinding illness is effecting (=as every case of depression involves more than one person) at least every fourth in this country. That is more than sad.
Therefore my appeal to you all, as you on here are early adopters: Make a difference. Pay attention to the mental health of your loved ones and your friends. It's useless to build a life and lose it in the black clouds of depression and suicide in the end.
I know what I talk about, I've been there many times myself. Suicidal thoughts are my steady follower since I am twelve. But I never had the courage to really DO it. I tried, yes. But it was more show than anything else. Yet, I came close. I'd say it was something like the 46th minute for me...
Maybe I'll get my book translated for you one day. Then you'll get to know the whole story...
Heads up!
