Elephant seal vista may get friendlier to walkers

Following the success of the public boardwalk along the southern end of the Piedras Blancas elephant seal viewing area, three state agencies want to put a similar walkway on the northern end.
The county Planning Department plans to hold a hearing today about issuing a coastal development permit for the $300,000 project.

State Parks, the California Coastal Conservancy and the California Conservation Corps would cooperate on the boardwalk.

Visitors watch the seals from the boardwalk at the viewing area along Highway 1, south of Piedras Blancas.

I was extremely happy this morning when I read this article.

While trying to photogaph these creatures in the past, I've fallen down. The eroded conditions that take you clear back to the fence and up and down gets increasingly difficult to navigate. I've wanted to capture these fascinating creatures on a calm day, but have yet to return to do so in two years. If you view the video streams, notice the sound of the wind. The next problem is the coastal fogs. Most days can be foggy and cold, so the lense mists up and everything becomes grainy. The quality of the photos is also less, due to low light conditions, as I don't get off work in time to do more than catch a sunset there once in awhile. The good news is that the weather continues to improve, the days are getting longer and hopefully in about a week when I return, I can do a better job of capturing their nature and beauty.

There is no level ground for a triple legged tripod so by the time you set up, get leveled on each of three legs of it, then try to steady with winds, set to automatic or steady modes, you've lost your chance to capture the action, now they lay asleep for the night as it's grown dark in a very short period of time. The news today made me very happy to read.

I wanted to include a link for you to see where you can capture the news locally, yourself. I suggest if you get a chance to come this way and haven't, that you do remember that they lay littered deep a little earlier in the season and that you can watch and listen to Elephant Seals at the Point that are birthing and resting.

If it's too cold or damp you can take in the famous Heast Castle there. You also see articles at this website about the local Turtle & Tortoise Club called TooSloTurtle&TortoiseClub, headed for many years now by Bob Thomas. He's quite the hero to this Herp Lover whom is here on the Central Coast of California.
