Anxiety coping skills
(I'm feeling
amused
)
I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for years. I don't anymore.. Not panic attacks anyway :) About 14 yrs ago.Patrick's family, while on their way to Cape Breton,dropped by to see our new abode! All went well as it was a weekend and Patrick was home. Dont get me wrong, I love his family but they CAN be "overpowering".Anyway,as they were leaving they announced that they would drop in on their way back.... to which I replied, " I wont be here.. I have to go to Halifax for the day. " BLATANT LIE.. They replied they would stop by anyway" just to check"... Now normally I would have remembered to make sure the doors were locked... so if they should happen to arrive I would be SAFE .
I forgot.
So there I was tooling around upstairs when I heard the back door open and the whole fucking family waltz in!! What COULD I do??? I was caught, not only HOME ,but lying!! :) I ran into the closet in our upstairs bedroom.. shut the door over.. its one of those louver doors that doesnt quite close. Stood behind Pat's housecoat with my feet in his sneakers and FROZE! They wandered all over the damn house commenting on this and that, (excellent comments, I might add)and even came into the room where I was ,ah.."resting" My heart was beating a mile a minute and I was terrified I would laugh or sneeze.or fall out!!! They must have been in the house a good 15 minutes which seemed like 2 days! Finally they left and I waited a long time after I heard the car pull away before I came out.One never knows.:) All I could think of is what the fuck do I say if they open the door and see me there?? I mean what the fuck COULD you say? Really.
My hubby is a therapist and I'm a psyche nurse. We have recieved rave reviews on this story! He uses it in his "Coping With Anxiety" groups.... It seems to be a good icebreaker..LOL!!

This is priceless. Something you would see in a movie. So have you renamed your closet...HALIFAX ? LOL
This is why I always lock my doors. Ya need to put a lock on the closet door..From the inside..for any possible future mishaps. Crack up.

I had an experience akin to this when I was about 11, I was playing with friends in a woodlands, decided to leave, alone, but then I decided to return, I returned quietly and without declaring myself, when I came within ears reach of the group I could hear that they were talking about me, and not nicely ;-( This troubled me for several weeks, during which I did not wish to be friends with the group and individuals, until I started to realise that I had partook in exactly the same behaviour in the past, when someone was absent they would become the target for ridicule and abuse ;-( I started to realise that this type of behaviour, while hurtfull, is not necessarily as spitefull as it first seemed, that the majority of those involved just desired a feeling of inclusion, and then, after a few months of observation, I started to notice that this is a behaviour which many adults also partake in, that this fear inspired 'nastiness' is no more than an ineffective coping strategy ;-)

You could say : "Um, hello there. What a surprise! I just got in from Halifax and came in through the window, because the door was jammed. Um, excuse me while I go fetch my shoes from the porch. lol

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this one. One of your finer moments in a life of fine moments. LOL, LOL. I know if you were caught you would come up with something good which in turn would have turned into another fine moment. ROFL I could only give 2 thumbs up. I would give more if they were available. Picturing you hiding in the closet (probably shaking like a dog shitting razor blades) would be worth at least 10 thumbs.

I guess I'm an ass - I'd just say "Don't come!" or "Yeah - you caught me.." (but I'm an ass and you're obviously a nice lady who hides in her closet)
