Avatar the Last Airbender finale: my thoughts
(I'm feeling contemplative)
... and now the story is over.
I fisrtly have to admit: I cried. I was depressed for the whole day after watching it.
I was also royally pissed off.
Bryke, I love you guys for giving us this terrific show. I love you to bits, but I gotta say- you disappointed me a bit. But first, let's get to the good points- just so that this dosn't turn into a Bryke-bash.
I loved the idea that Aang still got to defeat Ozai in his own way- without having to resort to the murder the others were pushing him towards. I love Crazula, her breakdown at her loss, the entire soundtrack for that fight, and, of course, how Katara beat her (my mom ran into the room to see what was wrong- my brother was screaming so loud at that part). Also love how she used an attack on Katara to get to Zuko.
Since when do you pull other people into an Agni Kai, huh? Just like her.
I loved the costuming for the White Lotus- and Piandao's face when Zuko said the name. What- you though Zuzu didn't know? AND how the gaang found them ("You have a very strong scent" ;D ) Also loved the fight at the walls- and their speech before going in. Sweet :D Also loved- and cried for- Iroh and Zuko's reunion. I absolutely LOVED Toph's fight on the airship- THAT'S MY GIRL!! And Sokka's use of his sword as a boomerang, and how even in the heat of battle they were throwing one-liners. "Great idea- let the blind girl steer the airship"; "I was talking to Suki". "What- did boomerang come back?" Love that trio.
I loved Aang's fight with Ozai. Every. Blessed. Minute.
I loved Zuko's meeting with his father after his coronation- loved the coronation too (Aaangie in full Air Nomad robes? awww!!!)
I loved Ty Lee's joining the Kyoshi warriors- though I do think they're scared of her ;D
Wow- there were a lot of things I loved. But just so that this post can finally come to an end, let's go to the flip side: what I didn't like. Most of it can be under one category; the second issue needs its own heading.
1. Time
Was it absolutely necesary to finish the story in 4 episodes? Because by doing so, a lot of beautiful parts of the story ended up being rushed. Like the re-taking of Ba Sing Se: all we saw Iroh do is break the wall... and burn a flag. WOW. I know the focus was on the gaang- but I can still complain about that.
Also, consider Aang's beating Ozai his own way. Yea, I know I said I loved it: I just had a problem with him avoiding the issue- yet again. The throwing in of him meeting a giant lion turtle just before confronting Ozai who- miracle of miracles- teaches him how to take away someone's bending.
Wow.
I'm sorry, but how it was done just seemed like a rushed patch job. It was an excellent concept, but I guess time constraints kind of got in the way there.
2. Kataang
Over the past year, i've come to realise that Kataang is not neccessarily the best thing for Katara or Aang (yea, i ship Zutara- but it's for a good reason!) I'm NOT saying that I wished Zutara happened: because the show's development wouldn't be enough for it. I just wish that Kataang DIDN'T.
If Bryke ever continues the story (pretty pleeease?), Zutara should be something to consider.
Anyway, that's it for me. I'm gonna go work on my vid response to the finale Kataang shipping. Later!
