Carbon Monoxide Music Forums
(I'm feeling Not Sure)

Here is what I think about internet forums and why I decided to start my own

I’ve always been intrigued with internet forums and what they can achieve. Sometimes they can just be a vantage point to attack people and be childish from behind the relative safety net of a computer screen. However on other forums that are well run, well moderated and have professional admin who know what they are doing and thorough and exact with the way they do things, forums can breathe life into some of the most passionate, provoking and entertaining content on the web.

As a musician it is very important to network with people. I myself can find it very hard to connect with new people face to face. Internet forums on websites such as MySpace, esnips and Soundclick got me thinking about possibly setting up my own forum. Soundclick’s forum especially probably had the best interface and ideas so I decided that I wanted to mimic the success of soundclick by created essentially a replica of the soundclick website. The difference was, that I was to be the admin and make the rules and take charge of things. I wanted control of the layout, the design, the members, the logos, the rules everything. The only condition is that not a single penny of my GBP was to be spent on it, Perhaps naïve in that sense.

A free web host was needed. I did the usual and typed it into Google (can’t quite remember what I put in there). The PhpBB format was the same of both esnips and soundclick meaning that everything was familiar to me a lot quicker. When I started up the forum a handy tutorial was already set up on the template and it didn’t take too much hassle to design and set up everything how I wanted it to (Certain quotes, such as the rules were copied and pasted from soundclick because that is where around 90% of my inspiration came from.

Finally I had my own forum!, the only hindrances that existed where the Google adsense advertisements that appeared on the site. And the fact that the forum does not have its own domain name. The fact that it is still lodged onto a web host where it is not technically completely under my control is a minor concern; the fact of the matter is Carbon Monoxide has a forum for people to enjoy! The advantages are numerous.
1. It’s free!
2. Installing a forum by your own takes a lot of technical knowledge which I do not have, and time which is do not have.
3. Forum software often needs updating to fix security issues.
4. Daily backups are made of the forum.
5. The basic PhpBB board is enhanced regularly. Non programmers like me cannot do this.

The forum was set up to be a birth place and discussion and debate yes but there was another motive as well. You see, I wanted to create a place where I could trade ideas and content with other people. I want to be able to contact other musicians on Skype and talk to them and learn from them. I want to be able to send some of my music to other musicians and to have them evaluate and give me constructive criticism about my work. I wanted to recorded things (such as short guitar parts or piano parts) that people could use and I wanted vice versa to happen so that I could work with some live instrumentation rather than Reason 3.0 which is a load of crap.

Creating a forum is one thing, getting people to sign up is quite another. It took a few weeks to persuade a few “friends” to join up and (at time of going to press) they haven’t posted anything yet (“I’ll do it tomorrow”). The forum has become a Circle of depression. No one posts, so people who actually see the forum (through signatures on other forums and an impromptu video I created on YouTube) see that no-one has posted and so they do not post. I have to say I do not blame them, I probably would not waste time on a forum that has sod all going for it.

You would have thought that musicians especially would have enough bottle to take a chance. Especially the ones who are not exactly achieve platinum status themselves. I hope that whoever is reading this takes a chance and posts something anything, good or bad. In this predicament I find myself in I don’t care anymore.

After a few months of inactivity the forum will get deleted, which makes sense because im sure they don’t want graveyard forums taking up space and wasting money.

That’s all there is to it any questions then please contact me on skype @ CarbonMonoxideMusic
