Cause I don't want to write my English Paper...
The point of college is to study?
Nah.
Ironic that I'm procrastinating writing my English paper (on Silence of the Lambs mind you... blech) by writing but... that's okay.
So I know I said at the beginning of [last] semester that I was going to update this blog regularly, and that obviously hasn't happened, but a lot has been going on.
I feel as though freshman year I kind of just floated through college, not really taking in active role in the Marquette community aside from the whole... basketball culture that exists here. This year, however, I have taken a much different path, and I like it a lot but at times it is extremely overwhelming... especially now that it's midterms week.
Last semester I got a student job at our student union on campus (conveniently located right across the pedestrian mall from my dorm =P) and I still work there this semester, but I'm *hopefully* getting a job with the Office of Student Development next year working as a Programs Assistant for Leadership Programs (which is basically a job where I get to mentor freshmen and facilitate team building stuff that goes on with the RAs and different student organizations... pretty fun). I actually had my interview today and I think it went really well but I've been known to come off a little shy at first so as of now I can only hope for the best. Don't get me wrong, I like my job this semester for the most part, but it's food service/cashiering and although I love all the full time staff from the city as well as the student workers I feel like it's time to move on and get a different type of job.
Next week is spring break and I'm nervous/excited because I'm going on a service trip to Iowa. I'm not exactly sure what we're going to be doing there but I know it's along the lines of Habitat for Humanity. The city I'm going to be staying in was hit pretty hard by all the flooding that happened this and last summer and me and some other Marquette students are just going to be trying to relieve some of the damage that was done.
As of now, with the exception of working that is, I'm taking 6 classes and I'm involved with two organizations on campus. Since the beginning of the school year I've been involved with my dorm's hall council. It's a lot of fun... mainly because I really like our hall director and assistant hall director, the e-board, and a lot of the RAs. I'm on the community service committee within hall council and one thing we've consistently been doing is (and it sounds kinda gross but...) trash 4 cash, which is basically where we go throughout our dorm and offer to take peoples' trash down to the basement for a dollar donation that goes to a different charity each week. As I said before, it sounds gross but it's actually kind of fun because we get to interact with people we normally wouldn't interact with in our own building, and the money goes to a lot of good causes within Milwaukee. I'm also on the Community Awareness/Public Relations Committee within the Hunger Clean-Up Leadership Team. Hunger Clean-Up is Marquette's largest one day service project. It's actually a really cool event where students form teams and are shuttled to different sites in Milwaukee to either help to clean up the city, go visit people at a nursing home, or even go serve food at soup kitchens. To help fundraise for the event as well as to provide community awareness for it, my committee is collaborating with my dorm's hall council to have a dance-a-thon. It's a lot of work but I think it will be awesome to see it come together and I'm really excited. As if all this isn't enough I volunteer at a place called the Milwaukee Christian Center on Tuesday evenings. MCC is an after school program for kids that go to Milwaukee Public Schools (which, as I'm sure you all know, are not in the best shape). It's a really cool place because it has a lot of activities for the kids to do that most of their families can't afford. The kids are great and I love going there but at the same time it saddens me to see the economic conditions their families are in. Volunteering there has really opened my eyes as to what is going on outside the so-called "bubble" I've been in my entire, sheltered life.
I know this is a lot to read through but I just wanted to let you guys know what has been going on with me and why I've been M.I.A. for the past few (or more) months. After spring break I'm really going to try to update this blog more like I said I was going to at the beginning of the school year.
Also, don't think I've forgotten about college hoops... I probably won't be able to help myself and I'll start talking about basketball in my next blog.
Peace, Love & Understanding (get it? =P)

Wow, Emily, you ARE a busy bee! But everything sounds like a good way to spend your time. After all, college is more than just classes and sports, right? I think you're getting a very well-rounded education. Thanks for the update! (I enjoy keeping in touch with you on Twitter, too.) =)
