"It's abstract realism," he says. "The best realistic painting is abstract. When you're learning to paint, essentially, you start out wanting to learn to paint things. After you reach a certain point, you try to paint things in space. You become concerned with the environment the thing is in, the space, the dimension. You're not painting things as much as light falling on things."
