Freedoms...
(I'm feeling accomplished)
(no, i'm not returning yet. I'm just pasting this comment because i'm pleased with myself for creating an annoyingly long comment as a reply to a couple comments to my original comment, as well as mixing two debated freedoms into an unrelated video. i hate those comment boxes. those little inch wide boxes make my eyes tweak out a little and i invariable either double something up or leave something out. anyway.. the original vid is at http://www.livevideo.com/video/CrioGeniC/4BEB5C8AEF6C4E478B205CB1E76B36F8/what-motorcycle.aspx?m_tkc=13638004 )
I/We live in a country that has people who want the freedom to not wear helmets. I really don't give two rips if people shred their brain matter on the pavement.. What I do care about is increasing insurance rates and the inability of the average driver to pay attention because the tests for both driving and riding are pathetic.
The fact that the average speeds are higher in the UK and Europe than in the US and the death rate is lower, says to me that is definitely improving things. Yes, I know some states have stretches of fast road, but on average Europe/UK is faster (or was when I was there last).
I do agree with the weight/power idea, but that would would complicate things really quickly because of models. An easier method would be to just say "Right, you can't go on the highway" or "Until you have this many miles of experience, you have a vehicle that can't go over x MPH". I know that will be as popular as a genital wart, but if i remember, most accidents happen within the first year (I forget the miles) of driving/riding, so doesn't it make sense to limit the amount of damage that can be done?
It's like the freedom to have guns.. When a tragedy happens, people say "Oh no, another kid blew his classmates away..." because a) either his parents were too dumb to have guns b) the freedom to have guns needs to be protected at all costs c) we needed those bodies for the body farm and tests, so it's actually a good thing.
everything can be justified or brought down into a "well, it's a good theory, but..." but at the end of the day, if as humans we want to change how things are, we need to get out collective thumb out and just accept that guns kill people, people are shitty riders and drivers, mainly because of a lack of standard quality instruction.
