Knowing God in the Broken Places
(I'm feeling contemplative)

For those of you who attend my church, some of this will sound a lot like Bro. Willoughby's message last night... but it has stuck with me ALL day and the power of what he preached just keeps hitting me again and again...

Last night, Bro. Willoughby preached a message at our church called, "Knowing Him in Broken Places". He took his text from the story about Jesus meeting the men on the road to Emmaus, after He was risen. In almost a seven and a half mile journey, these men that had loved Jesus, been with Him on a daily basis, and knew Him, did not recognize Him while He was standing before them. The Bible says that their eyes were held that they did not see Him.

It seems odd that they did not recognize Jesus, until you realize what they had been through in the past few days. They saw Jesus beaten and crucified, the most horrible form of execution known to man, right before their eyes. You have to understand that these men KNEW Jesus; He walked with them on a daily basis. They looked to Him as their friend, brother, and savior. Can you imagine seeing someone you love be publically humiliated, beaten within an inch of their life, and then brutally murdered on a cross? It is unfathomable to me... and all they could do was to stand back and watch. It's no wonder that these men were emotionally blinded, and did not know Him. While they should have recognized Him by His speech (that Nazarene accent), or His physical appearance (they knew Him!), or even His message (they heard Him preach about Himself all the way down this road; the Bible says that He went back to the scriptures of Moses!), nothing opened their eyes to know that it was Him.

It was not until Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them that they realized just who it was at the table with them. You may wonder what about that simple action would give it away that it was He... but look at when Jesus fed the mulititude, or when He ate with the disciples at the last supper, or countless other times. It is almost the exact wording: he blessed the bread, broke it, and gave it to them. This was something that was so much a part of the nature of Jesus, something so much related to Him, that it could not be separated from Him. When He blessed the bread and broke it, it opened their eyes to know that the King of Kings had been with them that day.

You see, it's only in the broken places of our lives, and the storms and trials that we go through, that we can really know what kind of God we serve. Jesus shows Himself to us during those broken times. Personally, I would not know how Jesus could put a family back together if He hadn't done it for mine. I wouldn't know how He can heal a broken heart if He hadn't done it for mine. I wouldn't know that He is the friend that sticks closer than a brother, if He had not been there when I cried myself to sleep. I wouldn't know that Jesus is the father to the fatherless, if He hadn't been there for me when my daddy was gone for months at a time. I would have no idea how He can heal the sick if He had not been at my side through illnesses in my life. I would not know how Jesus can take the pieces of a broken man and put it back together if He hadn't done it for my brother and my dad. I would have never imagined how true of a friend Jesus could be to me, until it seemed like He was the only friend I had in the world.

I think that so often we look at God as the Father that is there to punish us when we're wrong, and protect us when we're in danger, and love us no matter what... but we miss out on so much of our walk with God because we never open our eyes to see Him as the lover of our soul. The Bible says that Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost. I don't believe that scripture means He came to save us from a burning hell, though I believe He did. I believe that that verse is telling us that God wants back the relationship that He lost with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. He longs to walk with us in the cool of the day, and to know our hearts. Not because of something we need from Him, but just because we want that walk with Him. Why wouldn't we want to get to know the King of glory as the friend that He is? He longs to know us that way, so why do we hold ourselves back from it?

So many people think that one day, God is just going to speak and give them a word about exactly what He wants for their life. I don't believe that is how my God works. His word is forever settled in heaven. So it's up to me, on a daily basis, to ask Him for a word for my life that day. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and when you're following Him one day at a time, living in His perfect will, you are completely content in Him.

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.
