offering BJs to the boss is not an option

So. I'm getting paid x-amount of dollars to teach from 9-3.

After that guy from work got "let go" on Wednesday, I was "hired" to teach his 3-5 class. This extra class that I'm teaching is temporary... just for the month of December, and in January, they will have someone teach the class instead of me to lighten my incredible light load.

Now for the question:

I saw the ad for this position on craigslist, and the advertised compensation is $12 more per hour than what I'm currently getting paid. So my question is, *should* I get that extra 12 bucks for teaching the 3-5 class? (and get paid the normal rate for the 9-3 class) If I *should*, theeeen, how do I go about "getting" it? :)))

Best trick in the corporate (err, school) world. You get some new schmuck to do extra work to cover a position you'd otherwise have to pay someone else to do, but the schmuck does it for free because they think they will get extra brownie points (or fear losing their job if they don't). It's a good lesson though. We've all gone through it at least once before learning to ask about extra compensation before ever agreeing to take on extra work. Just a simple "does this come with any extra compensation or salary?" would do the trick.

if going low does not work there is no hope for anyone :P:P:P:P

asking wont hurt but why not try making it permanat and getting the extra 12 bucks

They're not obligated to pay you the extra $12 an hour. It may be related to experience or something. But I still think it wouldn't hurt to follow Syd's advice. =)

Go in there and tell da boss you are LOVIN' that 3-5 class and that you noticed the listing and would like to be paid the posted amount. Worse case scenario is that the answer's no. Nothing changes, right?
