Our Man in Beijing - My cross-cultural play
(I'm feeling
devious
)
hi readers and friends I simply cannot believe that my last blog was Oct last year! how is that possible? Since October, i did a lot! gave the green light to the renovations of our indoor theatre space ( home of the ACT and my sometime living quarters), this meant packing everything up and i mean everything into boxes and stored so the renovators can move in. in the midst of this, i threw in an application for a cultural development grant to help us put on a production of my play Our Man in Beijing, a cross cultural beauty between Chinese and Australian. Written in English of course as it is targetted for an Aussie audience. if the grant comes through, it would be great as we get to eat some good meals. If not, the show will go on anyway as Rob Chuter has agreed to direct ... and now i am in Asia. Malaysia to be precise, working on the script, tightening things up and in between lines, Phil and I are doing guanxi with the local theatre companies. Landed ourselves a job for Oct in Kuala Lumpur. Gardiner and Wife theatre has asked us to put on a sort of a show/workshop for children 7-12 years! G and W are creating family theatre for Malaysia so it is really great. synchronistically i happened to visit RDA (Riders for the Disabled) and the riding teacher Sue asked me if we could do a music rider thing...and then when i mentioned G and W, Sue said it was their idea. Ha, without knowing it, i managed to connect two entirely different groups of people! Well, synchronicities are always a good sign -they mean my energy is in alignment with the universe...Our Man in Beijing opens in Melbourne in August ! Meanwhile I am in search of a theatre person preferably actor of many parts who know something about working with disabled challenged children aged 7-12 years old. we are creating a workshop to enable these Malaysian children (mainly of Chinese ethnic background) to learn English in a fun way using theatre tools eg mime, physical theatre, dance, songs, etc. they have hardly any English language skills...this theatre person also have a group of abled children on a separate workshop. Know anyone? Chosen person will have a great time, maybe even a small present for talent rendered... play by ear... depends who you are...one thing we do promise is great food and great time! we will negotiate the rest later. depends on what you can do!
