Privacy....You connect to the web... give up the illusion.
(I'm feeling nerdy)

Okay,  it's officially sad around here.   Not sad that the internet puts everything about you on display, but sad that people take effort to get that information.

I'm just putting this out there so that you may think about steps you may want to take to protect your personal information.

I was talking to another community member about IP addresses...  An IP address by itself is only somewhat telling.
Here readup on IP addresses and see what you can do to protect it/change it and hide it, if you so wish.
http://whatismyipaddress.com
While you are there, zoom on in and see how close to your location it pinpoints you.

Can other people get your IP address?
(hint. if you use anykind of sharing or communication service like Skype, anyone with the aid of a 3rd party program.... even microsoft has a free one can see your IP when you are chatting)

That IP address is not the biggest danger to your privacy.  Your biggest danger is the information that you reveal about yourself.   So yeah, grab am assumed fictional identity, and give out misinformation if you are that worried.

I will tell you this as I have NO ILLUSION that my dox can't be found in a matter of seconds given that one person put my first and last name in the credits of one  video.   Another person put my wife's first name in another.  Also given that I have made no secret what town I live in (this is where that IP address would come in handy, if I had make a secret of it), all anyone has to do is go to a public website such as the property tax accessors records website and type in my first and last name... and up comes my home address in a list and all kinds of information (accurate or not) about our home.

I'm not frustrated or mad at the internet, myself or the governement  for revealing this.

I am saddened that people will take steps to get the information and dangle these little clues in the bulletins, or blogs on other community members..  So yeah, if privacy matters to you as much as staying connected to the world... then approach this internet thing as being the con man.  Give out false information, hide or disguise your IP address when you connect, because there are people who sadly take the time to research your business...
Otherwise just know that you are out there, and watch what you reveal.

That said, this should be a place for many to leave the everyday stress behind and enjoy.
So have fun and enjoy.

Yep. Privacy wouldn't be an issue if people would act like fucking adults.

It amazes me how some people mock me for my video game/roleplaying/nerd habits as being childish, and then propagate this idiocy.

Privacy in that sense is not only over-rated but a major illusion. People who worry about such informations being "dropped" online truly don't understand how much of their info is already in the hands of strangers every day. Whether they are paying bills, searching for a job, ordering a pizza or whatever... our "docs" are willingly given out to total strangers daily. The only reason here on livevideo it suddenly seems like a bad idea is because the term "dropping docs" has been hijacked and twisted into something horrible that can be used against you. But in reality, it's not. Someone who publishes personal info about someone on LV or anywhere else on the internet is essentially just saying "I'm too lazy to do anything about this, so here... you go do my work". But the major flaw there is that no one cares. And even if someone acts on it by harrasing or abusing the info, that is a crime and can be delt with by the authorities. So... no need to worry about your info being "dropped".
