Public transportation
(I'm feeling
stressed
)
I was in Vancouver this past weekend and had one of the most horrific experience ever on the skytrain.
For those of you who don't know what a "skytrain" is, it's literally a train in the sky. they build a track for it over traffic, underground... it's a lot faster than taking the bus and it's electrically ran, meaning, there is noone operating it.
So, I'm not really used to taking the sky train at all.. well any method of public transportation that often so when my friend told me i had to sky train home alone at night, i was sorta hesistant... but i'm generally a happy person, so i was like whatever, it'll take me like 15/20 minutes to get home, no big deal.
so when i got on the skytrain, it was basically empty, except for the people that got on the same train as it did. so i took a seat, by myself, the middle window seat.. the skytrain slowly got full, and then there was this older-ish man, with a cane, over-weight, and he was shaking (i'm assuming he had parkison)..no one really wanted to sit with him, so when he asked to take the seat next to me so i said "of course" and turned away to look out the window.
the first thing he asked me was "are you chinese or mexican?" and i was sort of offended and i said " neither" and he said "oh what are you then?" i answered him, but i was still turned away, the only time i ever looked at him was when he asked to take the seat next to me. he started bombarding me with questions like
"are you tired, where do you work? where are you from, do you go to school, how old are you, do you have a boyfriend, what are you going to school for, where did you get your clothes from, was your purse expensive?"
and i felt so uncomfortable, i was drinking my coffee, and giving him one word answers, and slowly started giving him no answers at all..
everyone on the skytrain was looking at me like "are you okay?" or "who is that man next to you?" then he slowly started to sort of hit me with his elbow and what not, so i moved over as much as i could, and it seemed like he got closer, and closer. he started asking about my jewelery and stuff, if it was real or not, and i can totally feel him breathing down my neck, of course i lied and said it was all fake, and stuff like that.
a lady sitting across from me told him to leave me alone with the questions and everyone, and while she was talking to him, the man behind me tapped me on the shoulder and told me to move seats... and i w as terrified at this moment, i honestly thought this man was going to rob me or something..
i didn't want to be rude because i thought i was maybe over reacting, so i still sat in the same spot, and he still continued to ask me questions, at this point my whole body is facing the window, and i'm not answering him at all... and he poked me, and when he did that, the guy behind me snapped, and told him to lay off. switch seats or get off the next station. they bickered for a little bit. and everyone looked at my direction. i was still terrified, anyways. the man sitting next to me got off finally, and everyone asked me if i was okay. so i'm guessing i wasn't over-reacting. i know i should've switched seats, but i didn't want to go through the hassle of getting him to move, so i can get out just to stand cause all the seats were taken.
it makes me think about all of the girls who travel alone and encounter this. what do the do? half of them are too nice to tell the person to fuck off. i know i was. i've honestly never felt so violated in my life.
so what are some of your horrible experiences with public transportation? haha i know i said a lot but i'm just wondering if its just me or is it a regular occurrence.
