the ACT in Playspotting, Melbourne Fringe Festival '08
(I'm feeling giggly)

hi readers and friends oh, man! i am so excited. Last night i went for my first rehearsal as an 'actress' in Ticking Boxes, a 10 minute play that has won a place in Playspotting to be featured in the Melbourne Fringe. How koooooool is that guys? i am taking the part of a "middle aged Chinese woman who is neatly dressed". Was i ever neatly dressed? sloppily dressed yes, elegantly dressed yes, power dressing yes but..... neatly dressed? how did i get the role?. Well, it began with the ACT's inaugural production of FROM LITTLE THINGS. Frank, writer of Big Zhang and the Village of Big Easters goggled me when he was searching for Chinese actors, and he found me. (That is how famous I am hahahaha) . i went to La Mama to meet Frank and then someone in La Mama gave Doug Montgomery (Broken Mirror ) or Rob Chatu, artiistic director of Melborn '08 my name and phone... are you still with me, dear readers? anyway, Rob had 4 days to find this character who is neatly dressed and I have always harboured a secret desire to be Wonder woman, i pedalled across to him to rescue him since middle aged Chinese women who can sort of act are as rare as hens' teeth in Melb (so i was told) and even if i am not a pro actor, i have been performing for mega years as a Sociology lecturer of many decades (don't remind me, dears, just the other day a young lady came up to me and said - you taught me mother -ha???) so the long and short of it all, there i was, in 2c Staley Rd in what was a warehouse turned into magnificent studios and much more, there i was pitched in the midst of professional actors and director Johno.. and boy! it was a learning experience. i learnt that i do not have a voice trained to be projected (so i had better go get some voice lessons since i will be performing a lot of nights over a lot of weeks... beauty sleep gone for sure) Another lesson learnt - to listen to others' opinions and finally learnt to keep my eyes open driving home late at night ... thank the goddess Saraswati that i had no aspirations to be an actor. but was told i have been acting all my life. The greatest acting role i ever had was not tell anyone that my husband Hans had cancer till after his death.
