The meaning of words: Mortgage
The word 'mortgage' has an Old French meaning; dead (mort), pledge (gage). A variation of the meaning of mortgage is 'death grip'.
In my simplistic opinion, if an economy is founded on the buying and selling of mortgages, then it should be expected that that economy gets 'gripped by death' i.e. limited or no growth, high unemployment and a rise in utility and food costs.
