SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2008 (10:14 AM) Return to BritishBeachcomber's blog
Was it worth the wait?
(I'm feeling rejuvenated)

Well only you can decide

First impressions are that:

1. most guys are a bit confused
2. half the world is not awake yet and hasn't realised what's going on
3. the Live part of LiveVideo really is as truly terrible as we all suspected and will most likely be largely ignored - the thing is - most live TV is boring, even when does by professionals. Most things on TV which apear live and spontaneous are in fact rehearsed, if not actually scripted. Message to anyone doing a blog (whether live or not) plan, script and rehearse, or at least have a rough idea of why you are going on air, or ppl will quickly get bored
4. love the tabbed screens. The main profile is very cluttered, but at least you can see a bit of everything a channel has to offer, then go to the Photos or Blog, etc.
5. I've customized my profile so each tab has a different look and feel - different background pic and colour scheme  - just love it
also, this rich text editor is not bad, but very buggy...
6. one or two things seem to have slipped through the net - multiple friend requests to crew members has gone, 'suggest to friends' not working properly
7. great to see the 'bug reporting' at last - wonder how responsive they will be...

As for the LIVE blogging, you can either take it or leave it. Personally, I will mostly ignore it. Live TV does not work - if it's not scripted or edited, then it is 99% boring. Just look at Big Brother Live. Nothing ever happens - it's only worth watching the edited highlights.
LV (and any other amateur blog site) is even worse - does anyone really want to watch someone else talking to a computer screen?
Live chat looks more interesting - actually getting involved, but it's nothing new.
It al depends what you are here for. Anyone who thinks it will make them a TV star is in for a shock when they look at the viewing figures! Remember the hype over the LVers Ball? Most of the chat rooms were empty.

Far better than anyone expected. Everyone was waiting for the Live bit to happen - actually it's all the other stuff that really make the new LV so good.
Particularly the multiple tabbed views, so you can see the whole profile (a bit overwhelming) or just concentrate on the bit that interests you.
From a programmer and website designer's perspective, it's the little things that really make a difference to the user experience, like using Java to update the page, rather than refreshing the whole page every time, e.g. when you send a friend request.

I dunno. I think there's a lot of potential here. Sure, there are bugs. Someone decided to take what was done so far and launch it. This does several things. It shows the LV community that LV is still alive and kicking. It shows what direction LV is going. And it mixes a bunch of features on a single site that used to require at least three different sites.

I suspect that the priority now is to fix the bugs. I've had no problem with the editor. I don't think I'm using the rich text editor. I'm just typing in HTML and my browser has its own spell check facility. So blogging is all good AFAIC.

Live TV is the place that seems to need the most work. I also think that is the place that will get the most attention.

I thought LV was on the verge of going down the drain. This new site is a much better outcome than my expectations.
